The most common problem among first time hikers is that they often carry heavy loads from their backpacks. What are the bare essentials in backpacking or hiking that would involve sleeping over in various locations for a good couple of days and even more?

The very first thing to consider is your capability or strength to carry. I do not intend you to have the best physical condition but you must be able to physically carry your equipment. You don’t want to be the person that drags the people down during the trip. The basic thing is you know your rhythm. You must not move too fast but also not too slow or you’ll be hearing complaints about you. It is essential that you know your breathing exercise.
You must be very aware of what you are carrying; e.g. you backpack. Buying the lightest backpack will not make everything lightweight. I have to warn you, you buy a lightweight bag and it gets busted in the middle of the hike, you either have to leave your things on the trail or you hold it with your bare hands. If that’s the case, better quit the trip. What will happen is that most likely you’ll get stuck in the wilds.
Backpacking tents are also essential. These are of course, very different from the regular camping tents. Backpacking tents or hiking tents are lightweight because the activity your are engaging into involves a lot of walking and hiking.
I advice you to not just buy tents that are lightweight. Go for durability. It would be bad if you are sleeping in a very light tent and it suddenly rains heavily, then you are carried away along with the water.
backpacking tents and hiking tents are always lightweight but it is always preferable that you look for a brand with a track record. I suggest North Face and Coleman. However the decision to choose which brand to purchase is entirely up to you.
Don’t go heavy on the clothing. If the trip is for five days, don’t bring five pairs of clothes. The most important hiking clothes are dry fit, so that you don’t drench your outfit while walking for miles. If you feel icky wearing the same clothes again, you can always wash them at night and let them dry overnight.
Hiking shoes are also essential. Just because it’s walking doesn’t mean any rubber shoes will do. Caterpillars shoes are best to use in hiking trips or you can simply purchase a nice set of hiking shoes. As for socks, make sure they fit you well and put two more pairs in your backpack.
Remember to bring along some water, sleeping bags, towels, and shades so that you can enjoy your hiking trip. A headlamp is more practical than a flashlight.
As for the food, portable stove, first aide kit and GPS system, these are group items. The team leader usually divides the food and equally share them among the members.
